A hot nail can melt through acrylic sheet, but it is not recommended. Uncontrolled heat may leave a distorted hole, raised edges, discoloration, stress, or cracks. It can also damage textured and optical surfaces.
PMMA softens when heated. ISO 306:2022 defines methods for measuring the Vicat softening temperature of thermoplastics. Published PMMA data commonly place this value near 105 to 112°C. A heated nail can be much hotter and may degrade the sheet.
For a clean hole, use an acrylic-compatible drill bit, support the sheet with a flat board, clamp it securely, and drill at controlled speed with light pressure. Remove chips and do not force the bit through the exit side. CNC routing or laser processing is better for repeated holes and tight tolerances. OSHA notes that fumes from decomposing plastics may irritate the eyes and respiratory tract, so heated processing requires ventilation.
A manufacturer controls resin selection, extrusion, thickness tolerance, protective film, drilling, polishing, and inspection. A trader relies more on external workshops for machining accuracy and batch consistency.
With over 10 years of acrylic, polycarbonate, and polystyrene sheet experience, we support OEM and ODM projects from drawing review and material selection to sample approval, machining, inspection, and packing. Our automated lines provide monthly capacity of about 600 tons.
Confirm material grade, thickness, hole diameter, edge distance, tolerance, finish, protective film, and packaging. Quality checks should cover dimensions, cracks, burrs, stress whitening, appearance, and hole position. Export projects should review ISO 9001 controls, RoHS or REACH documents when required, traceability, labeling, and transport protection.
