Which material is better for light diffusion: PMMA or PC?

Light diffusion performance should not be judged by transparency alone. PMMA and PC can both be used for LED diffuser sheets, but they perform differently in brightness, haze, impact resistance, heat stability, processing, and final lighting comfort.


PMMA is usually preferred when a lighting product needs higher optical efficiency and a clean surface appearance. Clear PMMA sheet can reach about 92 percent light transmission under ASTM D1003 testing, and ASTM D1003 is the standard method used to evaluate haze and luminous transmittance in transparent plastics. This makes PMMA suitable for LED panel lights, light boxes, advertising lighting, ceiling lamps, and decorative lighting covers where brightness and visual clarity are important.


PC is stronger when the lighting structure requires higher impact resistance or better safety performance. Clear polycarbonate sheet is commonly measured at about 88 to 89 percent light transmission under ASTM D1003, while impact strength is much higher than PMMA in many engineering applications. For public lighting, industrial lighting, transportation lighting, or fixtures that may face vibration and installation stress, PC diffuser sheet is often a safer choice.


Material comparison for LED diffusion:

PMMA diffuser sheet: higher light efficiency, smooth appearance, easier polishing, good weather resistance, suitable for indoor commercial lighting and display lighting.

PC diffuser sheet: stronger toughness, better impact resistance, higher heat resistance, suitable for industrial fixtures, public spaces, protective lighting covers, and demanding installation environments.


Professional selection should start from the lamp structure. If LED spacing is large and the fixture depth is shallow, the sheet needs stronger haze to hide light spots. If the lighting design requires high lumen output, transmission should not be reduced too much.
